In fact, I wrote an essay on this very theme in AltaZine (not one of those replicated on Judith's website, though). Beautiful Suffering as a means of levelling off gender-based power disparities is nothing new - there was stacks of it doing the rounds in the late 18th Century (apparently), to the point where Mary Wollestonecraft was driven to write a parody of the genre (also apparently). Surely that all depends on how you define 'superior'. You could cite the same three qualities (well, maybe not 'handsome') as evidence of him being a total jerk you wouldn't want to touch with gloves on. > Plus, the man needs to be beaten to within an inch of his life before he > will deign to show a wisp of emotion. Simply not true. I wouldn't say he emotes any less than the rest of the regulars. Indeed, if anyone on the Liberator's got a claim to be a wooden-faced zombie, it's probably Cally. With Gan a close second. Perhaps you mean that he doesn't do so in those areas of the emotional spectrum you would prefer him to? > When it comes to female characters suffering, I don't recall much of > this in fanfic. Well, I've certainly done it (in Kriegspielen [Star One] and Hunter [Star Two]) and I think Russ Massey has too. There probably isn't enough male-written fanfic to make regular themes identifiable, at least not as obvious as the recurrent themes in fanfic written by women. This could actually be suggested with a brief overdub to the original episode soundtrack (if the BBC decided to tamper with history and release a "revised" edition of "Blake"): as the director's credit appears on the screen, the volume of the music is lowered slightly and we hear Servalan's voice exclaim: "THEY ARE WHAT!? DEAD!? OH FU - ". At which point the final fanfare cuts her off and we are left with the logo and the sound of the closing synth sweeps. The guns all looked like the same design. So I think that Avon shot first. Of course this could be found incorrect but there is not enough information to say it is wrong or correct. It's fun though isn't it? Also, I am planning on unsubscribing from this list in a little while due to mail issues, so if anyone has a question for me I will be on the blakes-7@onelist.com list. However, I don't think tragedy is the same thing as 'beautiful suffering' in this context at all. Tragedy has a spitirual power which comes from the intensity of the tragic hero's struggle against an inevitable bad end. Its profundity is fundamentally religious. As far as an innocent like me can tell, the enjoyment of Avon's suffering is rather less spiritual and rather more erotic.
