He's also my boyfriend's favourite character, so every move he makes is accompanied with a nudge and an enthusiastic "There's Avon for you!" (and Ed is definitely not drooling). For the moment, Avon is too tense and aggressive to play the romantic lead in my eyes. I also don't find him particularly good-looking (time to don the asbestos suit, no doubt ;). However, I do like characters with a good sense of sarcasm; Q and Dukat were my ST favourites, so I have no doubt I'll be following Avon's adventures with interest. I never quite reach the drooling stage in any fandom, but I might be inspired to write some convoluted little piece about him some day. I promise to make him suffer beautifully if I do. Much, yes, and you can add in the teleport scene, where Avon's question "want do we do if we can't get you back?" echoes wonderfully from the earlier scene in from Cygnus Alpha (and they both know it) *and* the bit where the Plastic-wrapped People zapp Avon to make him talk, and *Blake* gives in so fast Avon barely gets a chance to draw breath, let alone Suffer Beautifully, in Stoic Silence or any other way. *And* add this bit too the *look* Blake gives Avon, and the resignation on Avon's face ("yes, well, it was a nice idea.") ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 00:57:23 PST From: "Sally Manton" To: blakes7@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: [B7L] ADMIN: Maximum allowed size of posting Message-ID: <20000321085723.40308.qmail@hotmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Calle asked: I'm happy, but (forgive, but I'm a complete Luddite, a pothole on the Information Superhighway) what happens if a post is over - would it bounce back to me for trimming? I'd say that learning an instrument, singing, and presumably writing that song shows more 'significant' interest in music than listening to it on a Walkman. I don't see any reason to downplay the few bits of background and characterization we were given about Dayna. Avon obviously didn't feel this way when Cally was asking about his > work and there didn't seem to be any hint of it when they first met. I'm not sure it's so obvious. The first time I saw the scene in The Web, my immediate conclusion was that she was giving him a telepathic 'push'--her hand against the side of her head, the deep staring, the way he doesn't realize that asking about the forward detectors is *not* a normal question just because she's interested in his work--and this impression was reinforced by the discovery that the Lost could not only control Cally, but take over Jenna as well. That's still my read of it; he's pretty quick to jump to the conclusion that Cally's behind the problems when he's on the flight deck, clear of her direct influence. As for the interest in Time Squad, there's a great deal of difference between being interested in the abilities of an alien you've just met and trusting one to live in close quarters with you. > What we do know: Gan implies Avon made the same observation as Jenna, but > this doesn't seem likely, given what we know. > As for the alien element, Jenna (and possibly Gan) may have prejudice > against aliens, but Avon seems to have put humans at the bottom of his > list. > > In other words, I think he _likes_ her. I can see you have a wonderful future as a spin doctor. Sorry, but I think you're jumping through hoops to make Avon and Cally's relationship more comfortable than it is. Avon rags on Cally about being an alien for three seasons--Weapon and Children of Auron spring instantly to mind, and she certainly feels the sting of it, as she calls him on it in both Children and Sarcophagus. He also criticizes her about relying on her psychic abilities instead of reason, and it's clear he dislikes her culture. No matter what their level of intimacy, their relationship definitely has some prickly edges and I don't see Avon modifying either his harsh judgments or his sharp tongue because he likes her. IMO, he'd be more likely to do the reverse; his standards of someone he likes would be quite high. Look at his relationship with Blake. Avon - I can seem him working quite well with the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) as, despite the frilled shirts, he was quite serious and business-like alot of the time, much less frivolity than some of the others. They could have a professional relatioship based on respect for one another's abilities like he Dr and Liz Shaw. There could be some conflict of egos though. Mind you, neither of them would like being at the Brigadier's beck and call. :) Also I'm sure the 3rd Dr would *love* Avon's silver shirt! Vila - It would have to be the Second Doctor. (Pat Troughton) I can just imagine them panicking together, or sharing sleight of hand tricks and practising them all on poor, unsuspecting Jamie! Also I can just imagine the Doctor trying to be roproachfully stern about Vila's stealing and failing miserably. Cally - I can see her fitting in really well with the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) and Nyssa. All three share a quietly polite determination that would make them a formidable team. Also (3rd Season) Cally and Nyssa have shared some similar experiences:- power-mad megalomaniac destroying first the remains of their families and then their home planets. (Which leads me to team up the Master and Servalan - what a combination!) And, as Time Lords are midly telepathic Cally would feel less isolated with him. (The TARDIS herself is also midly telepathic.) Jenna - The Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) from the American TV movie rather than the series. A slightly older, more world weary Doctor would sit well with Jenna's cynical asides and her attempts to see past her own innate selfishness and to help others. Also she'd *love* to learn how to pilot the TARDIS, now there's a challenge for her! Blake - Hhhm. No Doctor would put up with being bossed around my him and his 'ends justify the means' hypocrisy (C.F. Bounty) would get short shrift with most Doctors. The 7th would be interesting as he could manipulate rings around Blake! With the 4th or the 6th (The two Bakers) he could compare curls. Tarrant - the First Doctor (William Hartnell) always needs brave, headstrong (and often arguementative) young male companions. In fact his companion Steven (Peter Purves) Taylor practically *is* Tarrant - a handsome, strong, brave, often rash, spacepilot from the future with a dubious haircut. I can see the First Doctor, Tarrant and Vicki in my mind's eye now! Soolin - the Sixth Doctor. (Colin Baker) She'd be a good foil for him with her dry wit puncturing his pomposity and her cynicism and cool demeanor providing a counterpoint to his passion. Also she's more wordly and less whine-y than Peri or Mel. she's just have to stop shooting people quite so much. Well, those are my thoughts. Ideas anyone? Can anyone suggest anywhere for Gan and Dayna? Dorian - "You mean you're here by choice?" ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 07:44:15 -0800 From: Susie Wright To: blakes7@lysator.liu.se Subject: [B7L] Re: Resident Smart Guy Message-ID: <38D798CE.3F56338A@home.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit >From Ellynne: "Yes, but, as the resident "smart guy," Avon seemed to constantly to know everything about everything (with occassional, minor exceptions, usually when it was Blake's turn to do plot exposition)." In an interview, Paul said that Jenna was supposed to spout a lot of the technobabble but Sally had trouble so they'd give the lines to Paul. Would've been a different B7, perhaps, if Jenna got to show more techie experience. She was the pilot, after all! It was great having the female characters be warrior women of one form or another but none of them lived up to their potential. Too often they seemed like window dressing in god-awful costumes. Perhaps much of the fan focus on the men is because the women weren't fully realized.
