Hamlet.. I'm with Jenni on this, though having looked at Rob's site he makes a darn good case for Blake. I still, however, think of Blake as the absent one.. i.e. the ghost, and Avon as the 'just how much method is there is this madness' figure. Platonic friendships.. yes, the term is a bit nauseating, but in my case because it was the ultimate teenage fib-phrase, on a par with 'we split up by mutual consent', or 'at least she has a nice personality'. In other words, I am reminded of the 'Jackie' problem page circa 1973 and any women of my age on the list will know what horrors of angst that evokes. Re Hamlet and the absent Blake. I am reminded of 'La Disparu' by Perec, which he famously wrote entirely without the letter 'e'. Can it be a coincidence that the only 'e' is in Blake - and he is gone. All of the rest of the crew . Not an 'e' to their names. We will conveniently ignore the computers and the Liberator for the purposes of this exercise. Gilbert Adair translated 'La Disparu' into English as 'A Void' which is an even better title. Avon avoids. Avon in a void. 'A charismatic focus to stir up popular dissatisfaction and focus mass protest was an important part of his plans. Avon had no illusions about his own suitability for this position. It was vital to find this famous burly front-man. All of his companions would concur with such a proposal. A remaining difficulty was - what location? What star? What quadrant? Nobody had any way of knowing. How many parts of this galaxy could Avon's ship visit? What pain was waiting for him on Gauda .. no he could not say that word, it was too fraught with prohibition, possibly a fatalistic insight into a coming anguish which all would wish to A-Void. ' Hmm.. don't think I can keep this up. I can't imagine how either of them wrote a whole book like this.
