Blake is the alpha dog, so he seems maverick for a dog generally, but only
for follower dogs. He's very much the leader dog.

Hello everyone.

Oh, I agree that Vila is a doggy sort of person, but I prefer thinking
of him as a beagle, as in the Wortham/Rosenthal story "A Furry Tale".
Have to reread that one now, particularly as I cannot remember what sort
of black cat Avon was changed into for the story (or even if any breed
was mentioned at all), and especially because thinking of beagles at all
was a bit painful at the time I read it.

I like cats and dogs in general (it's geese I hate), and I like Avon
and, since owning a number of the videos, Blake. Is there anyone else
willing to admit to being a cat AND a dog person at the same time?

Regards, particularly to Lord Rob Lucan

I have just completed a novel, which is not fan fic or anything. In fact,
it really has nothing to do with Blake's 7 at all except for the chapter
titles, which is why I thought I would mention it here.

They are as follows:

One: Voice from the Past
Two: Deliverance
Three: The Keeper
Four: Animals
Five: Duel
Six: The Harvest (couldn't get "of Kairos" to fit, though Kairos does
become the name of a new constellation later in the novel)
Seven: Ultraworld
Eight: Shadow
Interlude One: City at the Edge of the World
Nine: Dawn (again, "of the Gods" wouldn't quite fit, though two characters
refer to themselves as gods throughout the novel)
Ten: Power
Eleven: Breakdown
Twelve: Destiny
Thirteen: Sand
Fourteen: The Way Back
Fifteen: Gambit
Sixteen: Trial
Interlude Two: Weapon
Seventeen: Rescue
Eighteen: The Web
Nineteen: Pressure Point
Twenty: Star One
Twenty-one: Hostage
Twenty-two: Countdown
Twenty-three: Rumours of Death
Interlude Three: Orbit
Twenty-four: Gold
Twenty-five: Killer
Twenty-six: Assassin
Twenty-seven: Horizon
Twenty-eight: Terminal
Twenty-nine: Aftermath

And the title of the book is most likely going to be Redemption
(Incidentally, it is 618 pages, @140,000 words). Each chapter title does
directly relate to something happening in its chapter, though some chapters
are harder to pinpoint than others (The Way Back chief among those).
Sometimes I spelled it out with a mention of the actual title in dialogue or
situation while in others, I left it to the reader's imagination.

Other B7 parallels are two characters with the last name of Blake and the
fact that a major character disappears halfway through the book, only to
turn up towards the end, pointing a gun at the other main character. . .

Anyway, I thought I would share these connections with the list since I put
so much effort into making the chapters and titles match. Now back to our
regularly scheduled B7 chatter. . .

I'm a dog and cat person. Three cats and two dogs share our household.

I'm also an Avon person. Unfortunately, I can't find one to share our
household.

It does seem very strange the we in the UK can buy very cheapo video
recorders that play both PAL & NTSC (the cheapest one so far was 130
pounds =approx 200 dollars). Where as it seems (from correspondence in
the past) that the US VCR manufacturers have not heard of PAL.

Would it not be worth picking up one of our cheapish VCRs on a visit
over here, for use over there?

Just a thought.

Probably wouldn't work. VCRs over here generate PAL out (or fake-PAL,
in case of VCRs playing NTSC tapes), TV sets in the US want to hear
NTSC. One could get a PAL TV set at the same time as the VCR, I guess,
but then one gets to have fun with 110V/230V 60Hz/50Hz electricity instead.

As Calle said, both the output signal and the power requirements would
cause problems. (There are voltage converters, but they're usually intended
for appliances drawing less power.)

A USAn wanting to play PAL tapes would be best off saving up and buying the
Aiwa multi-format VCR (around $500), which will play and record in either
NTSC or PAL. It automatically detects the format of a tape being played.
while the recording format and the output signal type are user-selectable.
Nice little machine, well worth the search and the investment if you're
going to be messing with PAL tapes a lot in the US.

Yes, that describes me pretty well. I am a major Avon fan and like both cats
and dogs (although I still prefer cats to a small degree) and hate geese and
Blake. Maybe the hating geese is significant?

Well my favourite animals are the weasel family - the Mustelidae. Forget
cat and dog people - these are weasel people.

Blake is of course, the largest of the mustelidae - the Badger. Here is
what is says about them in my encyclopedia: 'The largest, with strong legs,
coarse hair on the body, and a black and white striped head.' The
resemblance is uncanny.

Servalan by contrast is of course the Mink - vicious little beasts, but
always well turned out.

Travis the Wolverine.

Dayna the beautiful Sable.

Vila is of course the Ferret - the very word gives it away. Plus ferrets
are very working class, and the only one of the group you would actually
want as a pet. Plus they can give you a nasty nip.

The Stoat, which is reputed to have a mesmerising effect on its prey, would
be Cally.

Avon a Weasel.

As for Tarrant - I would call him the Pine Marten. In the words of John
Clare 'the marten cat, long shagged, of courage good'

Alison (just finished a 2-month project an hour ago and therefore demob
happy)

PS I haven't assigned the skunk, otter or polecat - any ideas?

Yes, there is. I'm still boggling at how anyone could class Vila as a *cat*
person.

[Jacqueline Thijsen] Easy: he's unreliable, lazy, prone to falling asleep in the most unlikely places, and totally adorable despite those qualities. My sister has a cat just like him.

(Nor am I any too certain about Blake being a dog person.)

[Jacqueline Thijsen] He can't be a cat person, he's too much of a group person. But he's definitely the top dog.

Which brings me to something that occurred to me last weekend: the people I respect in B7 are all cat persons (except Blake). I like the rest of them, but I can't feel any respect for them. I think Blake is the exception because he has such a strong personality.

Bye,

Jacqueline

Moving away from the topic of toothy simpletons, I'd like to express my
appreciation for Blake's defenders. The boss does have his fans out
there, amidst all the Avon and Tarrant hype.

However, regardless of whether Blake's ruthless streak is good or bad,
it is there. And it's impossible to deny that he became more desperate
and more driven during the second season. It's difficult to maintain
that he wasn't a broken man by the time of Gauda Prime.

If someone spends years fighting against near impossible odds, and he
becomes hard-edged, cynical and autocratic, finally dying for what he
believes in, I don't see how that reflects badly on him. In fact, it
does Blake little justice to suggest that he didn't lose some of his
ability to judge people and situations. He paid a heavy price for his
early victories against the Federation. Surely it is a tribute to the
man that he was prepared to pay such a price.

Cheers,
