And why not?

Previously on Rebels of Hazzard....

"Yee-haw!" shouted Avon as he slid in the Liberator's passenger-side
window while his cousin Blake shot flaming arrows out the aft lock through
the void and directly into the path of the flotilla of
pursuit ships, causing a three-ship pileup, and leggy cousin Cally
distracted the lovestruck Deputy Travis by flashing her short-shorts out
the back window, until the whole family were whooping maniacally at the
sound of Sheriff Servalan's voice coming over the comm: "You... you...
Dad-gummed Blake boys...Flotilla 13? Y'all got yer ears on? Well keep
an eye out fer a big ole' alien ship with a Confederate flag painted
on the top...."

Ah ha!

Achevron puts all us 53 SCers in deep trouble, and the mystery poster
comes back again!

Some-one definately is haveing trouble with the internet!! (maybe the
escaping oxygen on the Signaf is interfering with the radio signals!)
Bye
Jackie
PS I am in no way shape or form blaming Achevron for the nuisance posts,
just trying to be *funny*.

A quick question?
Which list has received about 3 posts with just a date sent?

Which knowledgeable person can tell me: how come, with no forwarding
address, can this message be actually sent through the email system?

Interested
Jackie
PS please keep the answers very simple. I am interested in an answer,
but not intelligent enough to understand anything complicated. Ta

I quite agree -- smoking IS nasty, self-destructive, futile
and smelly. And Soolin would no doubt curl her lip
contemptuously. I also understand that you were expressing your
honest opinion and that you and Darren were fooling around.
I merely wish to suggest, no urge, you to a certain
circumspection when condemning an entire class of people. It
would be horribly embarassing to be caught telling a scurrilous
joke about black people without realizing that there were some in
the room. I assure you, there are smokers in the room. Nor am I
saying that you should not express yourself free and fully. You
should! However, you should not be surprised if someone takes
your honesty for brutal thoughtlessness.
Why would I have deleted the message before I read it? All
information is useful.
I do know it was not your intent to cause pain. I know you
were just mucking about. And perhaps I overreacted. If so, I am
very sorry. I am speaking from the point of view of someone
(who, by the way, lost her mother to cancer from smoking) who
believes that kindness is the glue of civilization. Perhaps I
could suggest you might hate the sin and not the sinner? Many of
us started smoking before anyone (except perhaps the tobacco
companies) knew that it was lethal. It might be fair to think
ill of people who start smoking now. All the cards are on the
table.
I disagree with you about contempt and compassion not being
mutually exclusive.
Now if you mean it that you expect people to be offensive on
this list, I am on the wrong list.
Before I shut up about this forever, you have my sympathies
on the loss of your parents. My mother took 2 years to die. I
was her primary care giver. I know what you went through.
I guess the bottom line of the whole discussion for me is
this: The world is a pretty crappy place anyway. I don't expect
you or anyone else to be a pollyanna. But maybe not to be a
judgmental, self-righteous person either. If you've never been
through nicotine withdrawal, you dont' know the whole story.
     Patti

I always thought the decision was made to cut the crying with the
rating only as an excuse, the real reason being that the decision was
made by men, and men don't cry. In other words it *made them
feel something*, so it couldn't be good for little boys to see
it. Well, macho men who make big decisions about TV series don't cry.
Do they?

I found the same in Jan, when I went to buy a copy of the play. The
girl could`nt find a reference of it anywhere, so asked a fellow
worker. Who replied that is was on their "best seller" list. I asked
how it could be on their best seller list when a) they did not have any
copies; b) never had any copies (and so could not have sold out) & c)
could not get hold of any copies until the end of Feb!!
I was told that that was how they were "promotioning" it.

Isn`t claimimg it to be on their best seller list when they hadn`t sold
any, against the trade descriptions act?

General reminder for new list members. If anyone writes slash or adult fanfic
in zines under their own name and is worried about their name appearing on the
web, please contact me and tell me what name you wish to appear under on my web
page.

We'll do this for gen fic too, but only if you're really worried - it seems
unlikely that employers, etc. would worry about anyone writing non-sexual
fiction.

Judith

PS. Remember that search engines take many months to update their records.
When we remove something from the page, it may be a fair time before it vanishes
from the search engines.

You spend a fortune on pirate copies. I had a complete set. Na Na Na
Na!

(on betamax!!)

And when my friend transfered over to VHS I got her betamax collection
as well.

Even so, with 2 complete sets of pirate copies, I still wore out the
begining of Rumours on both sets with repeated viewing. (in the long and
distant past before I got a second VCR)

In view of your description, I might just hold off buying a second set
(although I might get another copy of "Rumours" - just in case!!)

Here's an update on my Newbie Writer's Web page. The site is coming along
nicely and is finally up on a server where I can test and edit it (a tedious
process.) I have a few entries now in the "Expert Advice" section, the "Story
Bits" section, and the "Examples of Good Writing" section. These are
relatively easy to find as there is so much talent out there for me to sift
through. However, I would love to have some examples of BAD writing. I found
it very usefull to see examples of both good and bad in several writing books
I have. Unfortunately, I am completely dependent on you "experts" out there
to provide these for me. I don't mind asking someone to post samples of their
good writing, but as a humble newbie, I am in no position to pass negative
judgements on someone else's work.

So, what you talented folks need to do is dig back into your archives and find
something you wrote when you were just starting out - something truly
terrible. Or maybe something from a first draft that was pitiful before you
rewrote it into something wonderfull. I expect the only folks out there who
might be willing to do this are the writers who've been doing this for a long
time, and are secure enough in their skills now to admit to some "humble
beginnings." Please, please don't send me any bad examples of anyone else's
work. That would be tacky. I would be happy to post them anonymously, but it
would be more fun to put your name on it and brag about how far you've come.
If I can't find any bad B7, I'll resort to excerpts from writing texts, but it
will be comparitively boring.

Contributions in any category are welcome, as long as they are gen in nature.
I don't want to have to fool around with watching out for minors.

Thanks for all your help,
Donna
DCsquared@aol.com
p.s. If you're really interested in seeing the site before you commit your
material, e-mail me and I'll send you the site address. I'd rather wait to
show it off to the public until it's in finished form, with all the links
working and credits posted.

There doesn't strictly have to be an address in the message for it to

After hearing that there was a Blake's 7 bit in Jean Lorrah's Star Trek
novel, The IDIC Epidemic, that I so fondly remembered, I just had to
read it again. I figured I'd quote the first bit of it in case anyone
doesn't have the book. Remember this is copyrighted material, etc....

"Spock watched Landing Party Seven arive, six people drawn from
engineering, computer sciences, medicine, economics, security and ship's
stores. Kirk sometimes referred to this team as the 'IDIC party,'
because their talants were so diversified, but the designation was
actually one of the captain's jokes, for to hear them squabble you would
think they could not agree on so much as who would stand on which
transporter pad.
Despite their disagreements, though, they were as efficent as any
other team. They were directed by the engineer, Rogers, a portly man
with curly brown hair. Running to the marine vehicle that landed just
after them, they began to assemble it, thr giant security officer
holding the pieces together by sheer strength while the two women in the
party bolted them into place.
Meanwhile, the third man assembled the onboard computer with almost
Vulcan consentration, while the last member of the team, a small,
nondescript sort of man, always had the right tools ready to hand to
those who needed them."

Apologies if I get the
acknowledgements wrong again -
my mail program gives such a lot
of junk with its quotes I just delete

[Iain]:
<<This, I think, is the key point: Vila doesn't hold grudges. It makes
sense - he's been pushed around constantly ("All my life there've been
people like you"), and growing up like that he had to learn to just
let it wash over him or he'd have become a bitter, nasty misanthrope.

[Kathryn replied]:
>
>Brilliant point! Never thought about this before, but you're right.
>There is no way he could afford, in his life, to hold grudges. It's
>resignation to his lot in life, not resentment.

I agree with both Iain and Kathryn, here.
But I'd add that I don't think it's *simply*
realism about his lot in life.

Vila really is a complete sweetie,
who cares about people - one of the
reasons I adore him and Lt. Gruber
(OK, so I've got a one track mind)
*is* that they say sorry before/after
shooting people. As well as being
screamingly funny, it shows that
they hate causing pain/taking life,
and feel empathy and consideration
to people.

It's a nice contrast to the
habit of Dayna and Soolin, as well
as most everyone else on telly and
the pictures, of shooting first and
considering the "enemy" as a human
being later or not at all. (This is why,
once my Anthropology essay on it
was finished, I never watched Blade
Runner again.)

However, from experience, while
this attutude/trait can make holding
a grudge hard, it hurts and angers
you even more if the person
concerned doesn't react with similar
grace. If they bring up the conflict or
attack you again later, you slap back
as hard and viciously as possible -
then wallow in a mixture of guilt and
self-justification afterwards.

Back from generalities to B7, I think
that if it had been Tarrant trying to
ditch him out an airlock, Vila would
have reacted with far more resentment.
(I don't actually believe Tarrant *would*
have done it, but that's a different matter.)
Vila forgave Tarrant after "City," I
think, because Tarrant was apologetic
and nice after it. Vila, therefore, found
it easier to forgive, forget and be
friends. If Tarrant had abused him
again, however, I think it would have
been a different matter.

Of course, this argument really depends
on teh fact that I identify with Vila far
more than with my revenge-driven Soolin,
and that's what I would have done.

[Narelle]:

<<You know - if Vila's at all like me (and I'm rather afraid he is sometimes
:-) ) he probably forgets to be mad at people. I get really ticked off at
something someone does, and the next time I see them it's all smiles and
jokes etc and afterwards I think "Oh, that's right, I was mad at them about
such and such. Oh well." :-) >>

And if you/Vila are at all like me, if *they*
behave like nothing ever happened you
feel that it is in distinctly bad taste to bring
your hurt feelings up...

>That's for most things, anyway. Mortal wounds to the soul are another
>matter. If Avon had tried to space me in 'Orbit' I may have even been able
to stay mad at him for at least a month. :) >

<grin>

Nah, mortal wounds and crass stupidity
alike are not unforgivable, but certainly
unforgettable.

(Not that I'm implying Avon was being
crassly stupid. He was being far more
sensible in that situation than I would
ever be.)

Amy:

Bo was the blond one, and I guess he's Avon, he being fairer than Blake,
though hardly blond! Both of them have aged rather well- John Schneider
(Bo) occasionally shows up in TV movies, and Tom Wopat (Luke) is one of
Cybill Shephard's ex-husbands on "Cybill". (Paul and Gareth have aged
rather well too, of course!)

Jenna would overall make a better Daisy Duke, of course, but Cally has
better legs, and so deserved the honour. Pity there's no one to play Boss
Hogg, unless I bumped everybody in the Federation up by one position (Boss
Servalan, Sheriff Travis), but then who would Cally get to moon in her
short shorts? ;-)

I really hadn't intended carrying on this discussion on the list, not
because it isn't interesting but because it's irrevocably off-topic.
However, I cannot in all conscience let this latest point go. I'm going to
rant a bit, and I apologise in advance.

I'm only writing this because it's something that I think is very
important and that I feel strongly about, and because I would be failing
in my duties as a scientist if I allowed these statements to go
unchallenged in a public forum.

I shall endeavour to make this my last post on this topic.

Such people are very silly.

What Graham has described is the so-called "Strong Programme" in the
sociology of science. It is a programme which I, most other scientists and
many philosophers and sociologists regard as intellectually bankrupt and
unworthy of academic respect.

The conclusions of these workers are either trivial, obvious or wrong.

1) "Scientific theories can never be proved true". This is trivially
correct. Indeed, the ultimately provisional nature of scientific knowledge
is not only appreciated by scientists, it is the cornerstone of
scientific theory and practice.

2) "Scientists can be motivated by selfishness, avarice or dogmatism".
This is obvious. Scientific method is a strategy for reaching some kind of
provisional truth despite the impure motives of some workers (though
scientists are by and large a fairly idealistic bunch: I think our low
salaries are part of the reason for this idealism). Nobody with the
slightest clue about science would be surprised by this desperately
obvious point.

3) "Science is just a social construct, on a par with shamanism or
astrology". This is wrong. The distinguishing feature of science is that
it works. Indeed, that could even be taken as its defining feature.
Science does correspond, in a well-defined, formal fashion, with the way
nature actually behaves, and that is its great power. It feels rather
strange to even debate this point via a communication medium made possible
by electromagnetism and quantum mechanics.

If we go back to the Myers-Briggs thing, scientists are generally INT
types. Isn't it the case that these types don't suffer fools gladly?
That's the source of the "venom" you perceive: the exasperation and
contempt of idealistic yet sometimes intolerant people who find themselves
being patronised by a small number of third-rate academic hacks.

This strong programme is the other aspect of the physics envy to which I
alluded earlier, only instead of trying to emulate the natural sciences
these guys are trying to pretend they really aren't that big a deal after
all. That's not to say that the sociology of science is not an interesting
and respectable field of study, just that this minority of intellectual
lightweights deseve the contempt they receive.

You go and ask anyone who was in Hiroshima in 1945 if nuclear physics
theory is an arbitrary social construction.

I just thought of another good excuse for buying the new videos if anyone wants
one.

I asked BBC books if they'd any plans to publish Blake's 7 novels. They said
not at the present, but that there was a slight possibility if the video
release went down well.

Andrew said: "I'm in total agreement with Steve about having
to resist 'investing' in the new video release."

Well I managed to resist for a whole WEEK. But who could
resist forever that limited edition sleeve and Woolies collector
postcard. Note there are two sleeves on the new release with
identical pictures, but the limited edition one is darker with a
sort of metallic look to it. I think I'll keep this set unwatched in
case I lose one of my old set (it did happen once that my video
recorder ate one but luckily the second release were out at the
time and it was easy to replace).

Dangermouse asked: "Also, what is the extra footage that is
reffered to in the ads in Previews?"

There is nothing on the sleeve to suggest extra footage.
