Another boring night shift, so I slipped out to catch up on some of the
latest arrivals:

Mr and Mrs Emption, with their fanatically Communist son, 'Red' Emption.

Mr and Mrs Ance have also brought along their son, Del Ivor Ance.

Mr and Mrs Smith with their son Ronald, who has in turn brought along his
own eldest, a frighteningly cold-hearted child known to his grandparents as
the Chill Darren of Our Ron.

That shadowy figure in the corner must be Terry Nostra.

And the curvaceous bikini-clad figure with the meat cleaver has to be that
well known babe, Ann the Butcher.

The T'farls have just arrived with their daughter Bea T'farl.

The Liphs of Crandor with their daughter, Kay.

And Mr and Mrs Fication-Programme are rumoured to have used underhand
methods in ensuring the attendance of their own daughter, Patsy
Fication-Programme.

Mrs Did-Avon-really-think-of-Blake who is of course married to Watt
Did-Avon-really-think-of-Blake.

Lowering the tone somewhat, Mr and Mrs Sto wiv their young 'un, 'Arry.

From Goth, Mr and Mrs Tent with their adoring protegee Cher. Cher loves the
Tents of Goth.

And all the way from another galaxy, Mr and Mrs Dromeda with their daughter,
Janet. (And on the same lines, Mr and Mrs Vader with their evil Sith Lord
son, Eric.)

Will the canapes last, I wonder.

A tragedy indeed. Let's hope that the mood can be lifted by the appearance
of those two Egyptian deities: first, the eight-legged god of goats, Cairo
Pan Spider, and with him the goddess who warms our hearts and hearths by
always raising a laugh: ha! Vesta Cairos.

Hi, folks!

I was 'off' for about 10 days and now, wandering around my usual sites, I
found the disscussion, pointed in the 'subject' above. As it lasts more than
two weeks yet, maybe some of you have already seen it. Despite it, take a
look...

An example at random from the posts:

You know youre a B7 fan when:
* Quarry pits and forests look like alien planets
* You stop worrying where Dayna keeps her explosives
* You wonder why cinema ushers seem to be carrying Liberator guns
* You think your shaving foam goes solid in seconds
* Your drinks take on a healthy green colour
...
* Avon calling takes on a whole different meaning
...
* You bother to freeze frame your video to see if Avons heels really are
taller than Callys (and just for the record, they are)

Just finished securing everything around the property as Force 4 Hurricane
Floyd nears the horizon. Expect hurricane force winds tonight here in Central
Florida. It's going to be a wild ride. Mandatory evactuations from the coast
have gone on all day and all the hotels and motels inland are completely
booked. The supermarket shelves have been stripped, the gas stations are
closed and out of gas, the shelters are filling up. The first rain bands are
starting to come through. See you all on the backside of the storm!

Playing against both the writer and editor of the Sevencyclopaedia is
going to be difficult, but I'll have a go.

Anyway, Judith has banned retrograde orbits, though I think they may be
allowed if you play the Picard Manoeuvre, but I could be wrong about
that. Anyway, Neil has declared Bayban's rules and gone for Kainessos. A
clever opening gambit, methinks, unless you do a red one mobilisation,
which I am doing:

Probus-4

Get out of that one if you can!

That "might" should, of course, be "mind", but it's more than likely that
software that has chosen to be user-unfriendly today is the cause of mental
sentence scrambling (or my trains of thought have collided horribly, one or
the other).

It's getting to the point where I want to carry out what a colleague refers
to as "percussive maintenance". Vila called it "kicking the living quartz
out of it", or words to that effect.

I've got this sneaking suspicion that the object of the game is to see how
many obscure postings can be made before someone asks this question. I don't
know why I suspect this, although the fact that Neil is participating in the
game might have something to do with it.

I hope not, for the players' sakes, as it's suddenly become an extremely

Oh ye of little faith!

I have in my kitchen a BBC cassette tape of 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue'. On
the box, it proudly proclaims "contains the rules for Mornington Crescent".

Now admittedly <grin> the BBC had a phone call the other week from a Mrs Trellis
complaining that her box appeared to be missing the rules, but anyone listening
to the radio show will soon be able to pick them up.

Mornington Crescent is a station on the London Underground and in the
traditional version the places visited are all underground stations. Until the
last year or so, Mornington Crescent was disused and it was actually impossible
to get there by underground. This is undoubtedly what makes the game so complex
and challenging to play.

Drat, I was afraid this would happen. Playing on a list, you can never
determine the order of play properly. As your move is obviously superior to
mine, I'll ignore my move to Kairos (especially as I couldn't reach it from
Probus 4) and reply to your move. Neil can then respond to my move, and you
follow on from him.

That's an interesting point with regard to the Picard Manoeuvre and I have to
agree that it would supercede the rule about retrograde orbits, but do remember
that it won't work close to a gas giant.

Red one mobilisation this early in the game? That's a little desperate isn't
it? Still, I think I can work out a suitable response. Nobody's used the
teleport yet and given that you used the Picard Manoeuvre, I think I'm justified
in a one-off use of an LRT (long range transmat). I will therefore move from
Probus 4 to Goth. Don't forget your breathing aparatus - the atmosphere is
toxic if you're exposed for long.

JUdith

PS. Do you think we should have a game of Mornington Crescent at Redemption?
That would give con-goers a chance to discuss the rules with our panel of
experts.

Hmm. Hmm. Neat, but not inescapable. If we extend the scope of Bayban's
Rules to include the brilliantly-conceived Argus Exception, which I do
believe is acceptable under the Maryatt Convention, then I can hie me all
the way to:

Calipheron.

The lovely Samantha could provide a High-Tech E-mail Mornington Superhighway
version of the rules, but she doesn't have a PC. Perhaps someone could give
her one?

I had always thought that Servalan was her first name, and that she was
something like Servalan Smith (or McCluskey, or whatever). I guess I had
assumed this because women in Blakes 7 seem to be addressed by their first
names, such as Jenna. The similar thing now is people like Oprah who have a
distinctive name and are very well known, so that there is no need to
elaborate. Mind you, I like the thought of Ethel Servalan too. I used to
have an Aunt Ethel who could have given Servalan a run for her money!

Yes, 'Deathwatch' is a much under-rated episode.

I wonder if you would have appeared on the hitherto unrevealed 6th account
on the Q-study, David. I discounted it as being noise on the grounds that
the only people loading on it were myself and Matthew, and we'd done our
sorts together, but we both rate 'Deathwatch' extremely highly, and that
basically its distinguishing feature.

Oh very well, officer, I'll come quietly....

Does anyone object to me collating all these and putting them up on my

Tempted as I am to respond with something glib like 'You mean you don't
KNOW?', I'll try and explain. Mornington Crescent is a London Underground
station. It is also the BBC Radio 4 version of a game that I first came
across under the guise of Finchley Central (another London Underground
station). There was an article about it in #26 of Imagine, the long-defunct
British role-games magazine. A few quotes to explain all to the
uninitiated:

'It is a game which can be played by any number of people, in any location
... Its originality lies not in its game mechanics or its victory criteria,
but in the singular concept that winning is nothing - indeed, winning is
childishly easy. The idea is to play with style.'

'The rules are simplicity itself, and are as follows:
1) Each player, in turn, names a London Underground station.
2) The winner is the first to say Finchley Central.'

'Let us take my experience teaching the game to a novice in the pub one
evening. He appeared puzzled by the rules, but I immediately started a
game, inviting him to name a station, any station, first. 'Finchley
Central', he said, and won the game. I challenged him to a secondand he
again opened 'Finchley Central', moving 2-0 ahead on the series. A third
time and his tactics were unaltered, 'Finchley Central' and an impressive
lead. But he looked troubled, confused as he realised he was missing
something. Another game, I demanded, and this time he pondered for a long
while. 'Turnham Green' he said, in a softer voice, then added, 'There's
more to this than I first thought'.

(Brian Creese, Imagine #26, May 1985)

Hopefully that's cleared up any confusion. Now I see Steve has entered the
fray, with a cunning opener that suggests he's not a player to be
dismissed lightly. However, I'll have to wait for Judith's next move before
I comit myself to anything rash. (Not that I'm quaking in my boots or
anything.)
