Which means that he might just do this in SN:TNG, since they serve synthetic
alcohol there.

Obligatory psychotherapy for those whose opinions and behaviour don't line
up with the great fluffy consensus.

Good question, Kathryn. What immediately sprung to mind would be: trial
by jury of cultural peers. But I doubt it, because it could be argued
that subcultures deserve recognition, too, but the subculture's values
may be opposed to the main culture's on very specific points which would
be what the trial was about. For example, if someone was raised among
the Mah-Kee (I'm sure someone will correct my spelling). if you went by
culture, their 'terrorist' acts would not be punisihed.

So, the Federation tolerates cultural practices (the Vulcan duels during
PonFarr) that don't invovle outsiders?

Or do they simply choose whom to oppress and whom to tolerate based on a
tyranny of the majority?

*sigh* Did anyone else watch the first episode of Voyager and think that
we were going to find out eventually that Paris was an idealist or was
in prison because he'd been framed? That with the Mah-Kee around we'd
get a refreshing new look at the politics and ideals of the time? Maybe
learn what the core values are? I think I watched seven episodes of that
series before deciding it was going nowhere.

Kai, if that's rambling, I would be awestruck at your idea of a
cohesive, reasoned statement. <g> That post was terrfic, and I do enjoy
hearing people analyse the less popular crew members. (Not that Cally's
unpopular with me, I just wish the writers had had a better idea what to
do with her sometimes).

What I found most entertaining was that his punishment seemed to involve
being sent to learn flower-arranging in New Zealand. Maybe this was his own
personal version of hell, a sort of Room 101?

That was more than I gave it. But then I packed in DS9 after the first 4
tapes as well, first time round. I gather enjoyment of 'Voyager' is
*entirely* dependent of aesthetic appreciation of Seven of Nine. I think
it's 'Maquis', BTW, but I could be wrong.

Altogether now, 'Ooo--oooh! Mr Grumpy!' Anyway, I'm feeling superior for
*much* better reasons than that :P

D'you know, it's about 20 years since I last heard that joke. During the
1970s, it was made so much that I was forced to start murdering people who
cracked it (I was a precocious and bad-tempered 7 year-old.) At least you're
not saying 'Yoo-na' - kill! kill! - or worse, 'Uma' - death! death!

Has anyone just been watching 'Dr Who Night' on BBC2? Did you see how they
nicked our sketch idea from Redemption as a framing device? I just may sue.

Plus the gratuitous slash reference. Hmmm... OK, own up you lot, which one
of you sent that script in?

Hey, *I* don't like her just for her looks! Yes, she looks good (although I
think Cally and Jenna looked better), but I also think she's a great
character. The problem is that they wrote entire episodes around her with
the rest of the crew acting pretty much as wallpaper. And since she's no
Avon, she can't carry it off.

Oh, well, it's better than having strong characters put on teleport duty or
taken over by aliens all the time.

I always liked the character of Janeway, and the actress who plays her, but
I'm usually in a very small group of one, whenever I mention this.

The server at the Institute which I just stopped working at was called
'Janeway'. Which is pretty sad.
