                               WARNING

This FTP archive is not fully up to date.  The only up-to-date
presentation of Project Runeberg's texts is through WWW.


                            Character sets

Because Project Runeberg's texts are in Scandinavian languages, the
ASCII character set fails to represent all letters of the alphabet.
Different computers use different extended character sets (using eight
bits per character, where ASCII uses only seven).  To make everybody
happy, this FTP archive stores multiple copies of each text, one for
each character set.  Be sure to use IMAGE or BINARY mode for transfer.

For a text called boye.txt,
    unix/boye.txt   is written in ISO 8859-1,
    msdos/boye.txt  is written in IBM PC code page 850,
    mac/boye.txt    is written in Apple Macintosh/Unicode 1.0.


                             Compression

To save storage space, and to reduce transfer time, some of the files
have been compressed.  There are different schemes for compressing files.

For a text called boye.txt,
    unix/boye.txt.gz is compressed using GNU zip,


                            List of files

The list of files has moved to a separate file called CATALOG.

In the catalog, the "status" field, "endless" means the electronic
edition can never be complete.  There are many incomplete works,
because the titles are names of large collections.  Many parts of a
collection can still be complete.


                              Non-texts

Directory fornsvenska contains Swedish medieval texts from Sprakdata
at Gothenburg University.  See file fornsvenska/README.

Directory ordlistor contains not-very-good electronic dictionaries.

Directory "tiff" contains images of scanned texts.  These might be
available in text as well.  The resolution is 400 dots per inch, and
CCITT fax group 4 encoding is used.  There is one file per page.
