I was surfing around the net the other day to see if I could find some interresting pages with the Charlatans on it. I used the Alta Vista thing which was pretty good, and I found a Charlatans interview I had never seen before. Some of you may have, but since there is so little going on at the moment, I thought I could bring that interview up even if it is from october 1995. It's an interview from when The Charlatans were in USA. You can find the interview at : http://www.gaysource.com/gs/ht/oct95/charlatans.html/ As you may see, it's from an internet gay magazine. I thought it was very interresting. Tim Burgess and Mark Collins are appearing. As an example, you could read about both their believes. Mark Collins have Catholic parents which don't come along with eachother at all, but they don't divorce because of their relegion. If you can only read mail, tell me, and I could post it on the mailinglist. (if you thought it sounded interresting at all). I gave you the address to this page, but some of you requested me to forward it to the list. It's a quite long interview, but I send it to the list in support to those of you who can't surf too much on the WWW. Cheers : With a recent Number One album on the British charts, The Charlies are riding high. In the middle of a mini U.S. tour, lead singer Tim Burgess and guitarist Mark Collins stopped a minute to talk with us about their current success, space aliens, and Tim's status as a Gay Icon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GS: Well boys, how does it feel to have your second Number One album in Britain? Tim Burgess: It feels alright. (laughs) It felt better this time I think. The first time it was almost expected. You know, we had a Number Nine hit single, a Number Twelve hit single, and it was like flavor of the month in Britain. But, this album, we had to work a bit harder for it. Mark Collins: It was my first Number One as well, so it felt really good for me. I joined a year after the first one. GS: You certainly are getting a lot of press in Britain right now. And, things seem to be starting to happen for you here in the U.S. T: I hope so. I really thought we nearly blew it last year, cause we just didn't come over enough. We just wanted to get back and do another LP. We get like that sometimes. But, right now we just wanna show this album off a bit, just get out and spread the word. GS: You'd be surprised how many people in the U.S. like you. T: That would be brilliant if we could get a little bit more respect in the U.S. You know, just get in people's heads and all. M: We really want America this time. (laughs) All of it. GS: I see the "UK" is back in your name. What's up with that? T: Well, we dropped it on the last album, and we'd go into radio stations and stuff, and they'd say, "The Charlatans, are you the same as The Charlatans UK?" I felt people had a bit more intelligence than that, you know what I mean. It was really sort of our own ego that we wanted to be called The Charlatans worldwide, but the reality is that some people like the name The Charlatans UK. I think people get used to what they know at first. M: And, the cover on the third album as well, having two completely anonymous people on the front cover without the "UK". It's like, "Who are these two here?" It was a bit of our own fault that people got confused. So on the new album, we stuck a big photo of ourselves with the "UK". T: Our picture's on the front so people don't even have to turn the record over. GS: Keep it simple. T: Well, I think groups can kinda get too obscure sometimes. People like simplicity sometimes. Like when we first came out, we had photographs on the cover. I think that did help, people seeing a photo of the group early on. A lot of groups at the time had drawings and stuff. GS: Who inspires you? T: I really like The Wu-tang Clan. It's a world that I've really not got a clue about, talking about guns and all this sort of thing. It really intrigues me. I like a lot of soul, too, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Sly and the Family Stone. Stuff that you can sort of...(as he raises his hands above his head and dances in his chair) Shaun Ryder of Black Grape really inspires me, too. He used to be the lead singer of The Happy Mondays, now he's got a new group called Black Grape. He inspires me cause his lyrics are just amazing. It's something I couldn't do. GS: How do you come up with your lyrics? T: Well, the guys will come up with some music that I really like, and I'll just completely ad-lib to it. Then I'll write down something, then maybe do a couple of more times and build up something. It always seems to be about what the music is doing. It's about getting it through here (points to heart) rather than through the head. GS: What's going to be the first single in the U.S.? M: "Just Lookin'" They've been showing the video a few times on MTV. GS: I've heard you mention that this current album is your best to date. Everyone always seems to feel that way, but is there any reason why in particular you think that this is your best album? T: Well, really inside, even though you do think that your new album is best, up until this album I've always thought that our first one was probably the best. I don't think the production was that good on that one, I think it is a bit lame, but I didn't think we matched it on the second two as well as we could have. So its the first one and this one that are definitely the best, but this one is better because it sounds more real. M: I think we paid more attention to the actual songs rather than just having a lot of chords. There's a lot of little intricacies in there, and when we were doing it, we were all playing our hearts out on every song. There's a real lot of heart in all the tunes. It's a really confident record. We felt so strong while we were doing it, and we had such a good time doing it as well. I think it really comes across on this record, that's why I think it's the best. I wasn't on the first one, I think it's shit. (laughs) GS: Any plans for more videos? T: We've done two so far. M: Yeah, "Just Lookin'" and one for "Just When You're Thinkin' Things Over." A kind of "gangster" video. T: We dressed up for that one. We'd never dressed up before, and we thought that there was a real lack of it in British Pop groups. So, we thought alright, we'll do it. And, we had an idea of what we were gonna do. So, I greased my hair back, and we had all these big suits, and we're parading around and all. It's brilliant. GS: That sounds great. Where did you shoot it? M: In a really grimy hotel in London. T: It's a real seedy sort of place, with cheap prostitutes and stuff. M: Ten pounds for a room for the afternoon. T: We just took over a floor in this hotel. It was brilliant. GS: When is this video going to be out in the U.S.? T: It depends on whether or not Atlantic wants to release it here. I hope they do. It came out in Britain about a month ago. And, it did really good, it got shown loads of times. People had never seen The Charlatans dressed up before, and so it was worth showing quite a few times. GS: I hope they release it here. Have you guys been on the Internet yet? T: I've seen it. A neighbor of mine in London has it. I've seen people go through it, but I've never done it myself. I've never been into computers myself, I've just never done it. M: Time to learn, isn't it? T: Well, it is. But, I'm really impatient with stuff like that. I like things now! I don't mind CD players and TV's and stuff, but computers you have to learn stuff to operate them. I used to be an assistant to a someone that used computers, and I would look at it and think, "I'm never gonna learn this." John (the drummer) has a computer. M: Right, he uses that for his sampling. I've got a drum machine, I've got my head around this drum machine just about. T: The colors on the Internet are amazing. It is really amazing. GS: Yeah, the government is freaking out cause they can't control it. T: Can you do anything private on the Internet? GS: Yeah, you have to use data encryption software, but you can send messages and keep them private. The government here doesn't want us doing that. They want to control what we do. But we have a right to privacy, everyone does. T: Do you believe in aliens? GS: Aliens, like from outer space? T: Yeah. GS: Well, I believe that it would be really pompous of us to think that we are the only life in the Universe. T: That's my thought exactly. GS: I believe that there's a lot of life out there, some physical and some not physical. T: Yeah, you can't see or touch. GS: Are you guys very spiritual? What do think about spirituality, religion, God, Goddess? T: Well, I was brought up to believe in God and stuff. But, my dad, the one who used to make me go to church, when he was 50, he decided that he didn't believe in anything. And, my girlfriend's dad used to be a Priest and then he dropped out as well. At the moment, I'm not believing in very much, but if someone comes and knocks on my door and offers to sell me a bible, I'd have to buy it. I don't really believe, but I'm sort of still a little bit scared. I do believe in Tarot cards and stuff though. I think that some people have a gift for it, like John's mother. M: I don't know whether or not I believe in God. I was brought up in a really heavy Irish Catholic community. I went to primary school, the headmistress was a nun. I went to secondary school, and that was run by brothers. By the age of 14, I decided I wasn't a Catholic anymore, no way, I wasn't having it. I don't believe in the Catholic religion. I don't know whether or not I believe in God. T: I believe in aliens. M: I believe in life and the Universe, and that's what I believe in. I don't see the point in believing in something other than that. I believe that there is something else out there, but I'm not calling it God. T: I feel as if we've been really lucky, and someone's been looking down on us. GS: What's happening with a tour in the U.S.? M: Well, at the moment, we've just come over to do ten gigs in the major cities. You know, buzz a few people up. Try to get the record company behind us. We really want to come back in like January to do a proper, big U.S. tour, maybe do forty-odd dates or something like that. Cause, as I said, we want America! GS: Tim, are you still dating Sarah (Cracknell of St. Etienne)? T: No. My girlfriend now is this little one, she's Scottish, and she's... M: She's got a foul mouth. T: She's got a foul mouth, and she gets into trouble quite a lot. But, I'm really proud of her. GS: How long have you been together? T: Two years, Christmas. GS: Congratulations. Relationships are so hard. T: Yeah, there's no guidebook to go along with them. GS: And, the stuff our parents taught us about relationships doesn't work with us. T: Yeah. She's quite a bit younger than me, I'm 28 and she's 22. And the way she was brought up is a lot different than I was brought up. It's more modern. It's different you know, from the way my parents taught me. I'm learning a lot off of her, and she's learning a lot off of me. M: My parents hate each other. They haven't slept together for about 20 years. GS: They're still together? M: Catholics, you know. They're not allowed to get divorced. GS: Yeah, it's nuts. The Chemical Brothers remixes, how did that come about? M: It started when we did Up to Our Hips. T: They were called The Dust Brothers then. M: We gave them a track off the album called "Petrol" to remix, and they did this fuckin' smart remix on it. And we thought, "Well, we like this." And, then we just kept in touch with them, and Tim did a bit of singing with them. T: Did a bit of DJ'ing together. (makes scratching noise and motions with hands) M: And, they heard some of the tracks off our new album before it was finished, and said they wanted to do a couple more remixes. T: The last thing was this Help album to raise money for the Bosnian war children. Like 20 groups got together and did a 20 track album, all within 24 hours. M: It's the fastest recorded and distributed album ever. It was recorded on a Monday, and it was on the shops by Saturday. GS: I hear it is outselling everything else in Britain right now. M: Oh, yeah. It's already made over two million pounds for the charity. T: We did a number with all of us, The Chemical Brothers, and this guy, Wags, from Black Grape. M: Who didn't actually do anything. T: He didn't actually do anything, but it was sort of like a vibe. He had his guitar with him, but he didn't do anything with it. M: It was the day that we'd just gone in at Number One on the British charts. It was like total celebration for 24 hours, and we'd just got this track down. T: But, that song was a collaboration between The Chemical Brothers and The Charlatans UK, and it worked out really well. I think there will be more stuff as well, cause I just think it's ace and could be really good for each of us. GS: You seem to have a lot of gay fans in the U.S. T: In Britain as well, I'm a gay icon apparently. So I was told. GS: So how do you feel about that? T: I think it's a really massive complement. I have had a few people that I've known fancy me. M: He had two guys fighting over him at one point. T: It was nice. They both kept giving me presents and stuff. We all hang out and have drinks, just being really good mates and stuff. GS: Sounds very flattering. T: It is. I'm really flattered by it. In Britain, there isn't a lot of integration of different kinds of people. They tend to stay in their own communities. But, we've got several gay friends. M: If you like someone, it shouldn't matter whether they're gay, straight, or whatever, you know what I mean? You get on with people. People are people. It's not issue whether they're gay or straight. I can't be dealing with bigotry of any kind, there's just no need for it. These narrow-minded people who probably go home and batter their wives or something. T: I like people who stand up for themselves, who live the way they want to live. M: It's time for living. T: Yeah, live and let live. That's it. Pretty enjoyable :) Eirik. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Apr 1996 16:28:18 GMT From: EURO-FOUNDATION@MCR1.poptel.org.uk Subject: I want to get off the list Please get me off the list.
